Starting seeds, an easy and intelligent road from the network

initial seeds

If you plan to finally start your garden in spring, you may be surprised that some of your plantings should start when it is extremely cold. That is, planting in rooms.

The song in the room has many benefits for all zones. It increases the success of your plants, because they gain a fairly easy start in the room, and also allows you to extend the growing season. Actually, for some colder zones (such as mine, zone 5), you need to start seeds in the room due to a short growing season. Some types of vegetables or other plants simply last too long to achieve harvest compared to the times we have between the first and last frost.

In what zone are you in?

First of all, you will have to find out in which zone you live in, because it dictates when you have to start the seeds, as well as seeds that you can escape from planting outside or directly planted.

Look at the map on this page and click it. If you live on the threshold of two zones, you should generally get information about the zone with a shorter growing season to be safe.

What do you want to plant?

There are so many varieties of vegetables and fruits to plant that it can make you feel a little crazy. Now, when you realized what your zone is, you will be happy to know that you can buy seeds that will develop in your area.

If you look at the back of the seed package for a vegetable, most of the time there is information about whether the plant likes full sun, shadow, how far from each other, etc. Online or printed catalogs of the nursery/seeds should have the same information about the zone.

If you are new in gardening, it is recommended to start with a small age. Think about what you and your family eat regularly and plant this kind of vegetables. If you are a great salad eaters, you will use planting various salads and mixtures. If you almost never eat squash, it may turn out that he is simply wasting space in your garden when you could plant something you like.

(Quick Note: Sometimes you can escape planting a vegetable that requires a warmer zone, but warn that this plant will almost always die with winter, even if it is two years old or long).

Ordering online seeds is easy and provides a wider selection than you can find in your stores locally. I think that seed catalogs are always nice at hand as a reference to future garden planning.

Starting seeds

initial seeds

When I was new in gardening, I had a moment of panic when I realized that I had to start the seeds in the room because of my zone, but I had no idea when I was supposed to put them on. Start them too early and you will have to deal with huge seedlings or, at this point, maybe even a small plant that you will have to move to a larger pot. It would be pain. Start too late and you may not achieve optimal harvest because of the first frost.

Fortunately, there are many resources for seed planting charts. These planting charts are a very helpful and great way to lead you when to start from what. Seed varieties with very long growth periods may require starting a little earlier than according to seed charts, because many seed charts are based on medium hybrids. If you are really uncertain, I recommend searching on Google (if you have a question, there is a chance that someone else too) or contacting a nursery that sold seeds and ask for their opinion.

Stock grain

Starting seeds in the room is easy when you come up with when to plant and all these technical things. You will only need a few things:

  • Mini pots or plastic initial trays
  • Space for seedlings
  • Lights (perhaps optional)
  • Heat
  • Soil

Pots

Plastic initial trays are not so expensive and are usually easy to use again for several seasons. You can also find small pots that work well. With some peat pots you actually irrigate in the water and it expands into a mini pot, to which you just fall on the grain. When the plant is ready, you just put everything in the ground in the garden. This makes planting very easy, but they are more expensive.

You can also use an old newspaper to create small pots. Check the tutorial here. Here, in our garden, we usually use old, cleaned mini -melting cartons from a local school. They have an ideal size, and the cardboard easily breaks off when the time comes to planting outside.

The new natural fertilizer doubles the production of the garden!

Space

It’s a bit obvious, but you need space for all these seedlings. Because you will probably need artificial lighting (see below), the perfect way to store TAC is the shelves, plastic or metal system. Then you can hang the lights straight under each shelf to make each level light.

Blind

Sometimes we don’t even have to use artificial light, but if you do it, you’ll really get the optimal growth. The developed lights can be a bit expensive, but I think they are worth the money. Invest in good devices and you will have to replace the bulbs only after firing.

Warm

Seedlings must be warm. Some cuttings really have to be spoiled and enjoy heat, such as tomatoes or peppers. Companies sell large plastic heating mats that work well. However, they can be a bit expensive. You will have to weigh the advantages and disadvantages to see if it is worth investing for you. The use of heat tape such as Flexwatt is cheaper, but you need a thermostat. Otherwise, keep the seedlings in a warm place at home.

Soil

The soil is very important when it comes to the beginning of seeds. Regular potted soil may be too thick and heavy for seeds, which makes growth slow and difficult for the plant. There are soil mixtures that work well, but can be expensive. Some gardeners are successful mixing a little sand with ordinary potted soil to relax it. If you start from a small garden and you are new to start seeds, go with an inexpensively general brand of soil with seeds from a local source.

After receiving seeds and stocks, simply wait for the date of planting based on the selected seed start table. Remember that you may want to stuck planting on some vegetables, such as salad mixtures so that you can collect the entire growing season, instead of having one gigantic harvest.
